A Path to Democracy

5 December

Just over a week has passed since the 5th International Youth Conference took place for the first time outside of the city of birth of the International Youth Think Tank, Gothenburg. Instead, the IYTT enthusiastically joined the European Capital of Democracy initiative, originally founded by the Innovation in Politics Institute and aimed at fostering inclusiveness and participation in European democracies. The IYTT decided to host this year’s youth conference in the 2023 European Capital of Democracy, which this year happened to be Barcelona. The IYC 2023 was therefore part of the program of events, conferences and activities dedicated to the promotion of democratic innovation and citizen participation.

At the fifth annual conference, the collective brilliance of 23 remarkable young individuals from 12 different countries ignited a fire of democracy-enhancing proposals. It was a true pleasure to meet the new generation of youth fellows and see them work together as one, showcasing a sense of teamwork and collective effort from day 1. We leave behind not only an incredible final presentation and an inspiring preliminary final report, but heart-warming memories of late night working sessions, lunch breaks on the sunny courtyard and new friendships. The recording of the final presentation can be found on our Youtube channel, and the conference proceedings are published on our website.

The preliminary report titled “A Path for Democracy: From Engagement to Impact” masterfully aligns with the spirit of the European Capital of Democracy Initiative, containing 12 proposals to improve democracy and empower youth globally. The report came together as a holistic program that seeks to involve all sectors of society to take concrete actions to bridge the gap between politics and individual citizens. From the global to the local level, from the public to the private sector, and with a special focus on youth – one third of the proposals are in fact addressed at young citizens in schooling age – these 12 policy proposals seek to create tangible impact on our democracies through the engagement of all societal sectors.

The conference was nothing short of intense, challenging, and incredibly rewarding. Together, we navigated through inspiring guest lectures and dynamic group discussions aiming to create innovative democracy solutions and at the same time foster a global network of passionate change-makers. It was a testament to the power of collaboration and youth-driven initiatives. The teamwork and dedication displayed were truly marvelous, making this journey an unforgettable blend of hard work and immense fun. The energy and commitment showcased by these incredible minds reaffirm our belief in a brighter, more inclusive future crafted by the youth.
